Man Utd prepared to smash transfer record for Joao Neves after extensive scouting mission – with Benfica wonderkid earmarked for club partnership with Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United is gearing up to make a significant splash in the transfer market by eyeing a move for the promising talent of Benfica, Joao Neves, aiming to pair him alongside the already stellar Bruno Fernandes in midfield.

The 19-year-old Neves has been on United’s radar for some time now, emerging as one of the most sought-after prospects leading into the summer transfer window. Reports from Portuguese outlet Record (as cited by Sport Witness) reveal that United’s scouts have been diligently observing Neves throughout the current season, with their latest stint being at Benfica’s recent clash with Sporting. According to the report, the Red Devils envision a formidable midfield partnership by teaming up Neves with fellow countryman Fernandes.

This level of scrutiny underscores Manchester United’s keen interest in Neves, aligning with Record’s claims that the club is willing to go all out financially to secure his services. It’s reported that United has made signing the young midfielder a top priority for the upcoming transfer window and has earmarked a budget exceeding €100 million (£85.7m/$107.8m) to secure his signature. Remarkably, they are even open to surpassing the €105m (£90m/$113.2m) they paid for Paul Pogba back in 2016, which remains the club’s record transfer fee.

While Manchester United is eager to secure Neves’ signature, Benfica is expected to drive a hard bargain, aiming to fetch the highest possible fee. Speculation suggests that the Portuguese club will insist on meeting Neves’ hefty release clause of €120m (£102.9m/$129.3m). However, there’s talk that United might sweeten the deal by including their young talent Alvaro Carreras, currently on loan at Benfica, as part of the transfer.

With the recent injection of minority investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, there’s likely a sense of urgency to get deals over the line, especially in Ratcliffe’s first full transfer window in charge. However, this will hinge on Manchester United’s willingness to match Benfica’s asking price. Additionally, they’ll need to keep a watchful eye on Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool, both reportedly keeping tabs on the talented youngster.
