Barcelona rule out Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi as Xavi replacement
Barcelona has reportedly crossed off Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi from their list of potential successors for Xavi, as per reports in Spain.
With Xavi’s announcement in January that he would be stepping down at the end of the season, the Spanish champions have been actively scouting for his replacement. Despite Barcelona president Joan Laporta expressing his desire for Xavi to stay on, the coach has remained firm in his decision to depart.
Laporta’s recent comments to Mundo Deportivo highlighted his desire for Xavi to reconsider, acknowledging the pressure but urging him not to feel rushed. However, Xavi seems resolute in his decision to leave, though there’s a hint of uncertainty about the future.
Reports suggest that Barcelona’s shortlist for Xavi’s successor has been narrowed down to Luis Enrique, Hansi Flick, and Rafa Marquez. Notably, Arteta and De Zerbi have been excluded from consideration.
Arteta’s contractual obligations with Arsenal until 2025 and his perceived lack of experience seem to have deterred Barcelona’s interest. Similarly, De Zerbi’s relatively modest experience at major clubs and the €15 million release clause in his Brighton contract have steered Barcelona away from pursuing him.
Additionally, Barcelona has opted against pursuing Thomas Tuchel, set to depart Bayern Munich, and Julian Nagelsmann, who will lead Germany’s Euro 2024 campaign and may extend his stay beyond this summer.
As Barcelona navigates through their options, the hunt for Xavi’s successor continues with a select few candidates remaining in contention.
